So, I've narrowed it down to 131 pictures from this weekend. Which is still way too much to actually post on LJ. I've divided the pictures in five categories, and the two first have like 12 pictures in it, so I'll be posting that. And the rest, I'll post a few pictures as "previews" and then give a link to my Scrapbook.

But most importantly!!! fan_eluneFan''s report is up! In several parts because it's so huge! You have Opening ceremony + Meet and Greet, Saturday (with all the talks) and Sunday (talks + signing). Kudos to her for putting this up so quickly, seriously. *smooches*

And it made me laugh this morning because in this other report, a girl reported Sean waving at someone during the contest on Saturday, thought he was waving at her. Made me realize probably fifteen people out there are absolutely certain that wave was directed at them. Heh.

Anyway! On to some pictures, mostly shots of the convention itself and a few "body shots", those shots were I cut out the head to keep just the body. I find body positions and lines fascinating like that. And believe me, you want to click. There's a special shot at the end at that batch.

Inevitable ass shot

I'll go join that comm right now.

I study it at Buffalo State College in Buffalo, NY - kind of. I'm a history major, and I took it because I needed an art class and I can't draw for shite. Still, I've fallen in love with it now. I'm thinking of delaying graduation and changing my minor to photography.

I have only done black and white printing so far, so I will have to scan my stuff. I don't even have a good digital yet, but I think I want a Pentax. The SLR I have now is a Pentax, and then I could change the lenses back and forth. I know I want to get a digital slr by December, for Flan.

Ah! I love that you stumbled into it and now you can't let go. *g* Photography really does grow on you, there's something fascinating about it I think. (I barely ever studied it myself, just can't stop!)

So what do you do in your photo class? Learn about techniques, or compare prints? You're going to print all of your photography? I really miss doing that, though it gets entirely too frustrating at times.

I officially fell in love with my SLR camera at Serenity Cubed. It was amazing being able to take so many good pictures (not worry about the cost of development!). So yeah, you should totally get yours before Flan. Digital SLRs tend to be really expensive, but they're worth it, especially if you can use the lenses you have right now on it. What kind of lenses d'you have, actually? (God, I'm so curious, I'm sorry. I just know too few photographers. *g*)

Yeah. Vae linked me to you because I was having trouble with my assignment and she thought I might get a few ideas from looking at your pictures. It's a basic 100 level class. It will actually be the 2nd time I've taken it with this instructor, I love it that much. He's letting me audit the class for the cost of using the developing lab. We have to learn black and white techniques, printing and things like that, before we go on to advanced digital ones. I love it because he's teaching us about shading, contrast, and the like. It is frustrating, but if you can do this, then you're golden.

Well, I have a Pentax now, so if I go with the Pentax digital, then I can just get the body, or maybe a telephoto lens. I have a 28-90 now on my manual. http://www.pentaximaging.com/products/product_details/product--ZX-M/reqID--5004/subsection--film_slr

Sounds like what I did when I took photo, except for some reason we never had any assignment but to shoot about a film a week, and develop at least one shot a week...

And I'm on the floor looking at that camera. Does it really cost under 250 bucks??? My Nikon D50 is the cheapest SLR camera I could find, and it was over 500 euros... o_O

Well, it wasn't 250 when I bought it, but yeah, if I had shopped around, maybe. And, I didn't really look at the site, just wanted to give you a picture of the camera, is it just the body or all of it? *goes back to look*

Oh, our instructor actually gives assignments. The first one was generic, to learn blocking, aperature, shutter speed, dodging, and burning. This one, though, we have to put ourselves into the picture, either explicitly or implicitly. Digital, though, much more expensive. And Pentax is not as well known or well liked a name as say Nikon or Canon.

Hey, what kind of digital slr do you have? I've been looking and there are so many to choose from. I think that I don't want the pentax, even though I have one. I have read reviews and they say the image quality isn't as good. I have it narrowed down to Canon and Rebel. One photographer to another, help!

I have a Nikon D50 (http://www.europe-nikon.com/product/fr_FR/products/broad/1049/overview.html). My film camera is a Canon and even though it's too old for me to reuse the lenses I have on a recent camera, I sort of wish I could have stuck with Canon... but the Nikon D50 was significantly cheaper for pretty much the same quality.

I'm looking at cameras, and I'm so confused. One person tells me Canon is better, another tells me Nikon is better. Now, granted, I don't need something too professional. With my luck, I'll get a camera and won't know how to use it...

If you could pick between Nikon and Canon, cost irrelevant, which would you poke me towards?

Now see, that's exactly the problem I had when I was trying to choose which camera to buy. Nikon and Canon almost always came up as the best, but I kept getting contradictory feedback on both. Truth is, seems like in the world of photography, Nikon VS Canon is like the equivalent of Buffy/Angel VS Buffy/Spike in the Buffy fandom - no one will ever agree, everybody will defend their preference like their life depended on it, and in the end both have their extremely good points and their small faults. *G*

As I said, if price hadn't mattered, I would have gone for Canon, but for purely irrational reasons : my film camera is a Canon and so I'd have liked to kept that "tradition" (ultimately, that's what the whole Canon/Nikon thing is about). But I'm super happy with my Nikon camera. I hear Canon has more possibilities of lenses, but I'm not sure.

Honestly, if money isn't an issue, I'd say go into a store, have a look at the models you're interested it (the equivalent of the Nikon D50 is the Canon EOS 350) and ask to try them out - see what they weight, what hold you have on them. Quality in the photographs they take is similar - what matters is which one you'll like best when you touch it. :)

Buffy/Angel vs. Buffy/Spike. See, now those are analogies I can understand. *g*

This is a catalog company that my professor suggested. I was going to buy used instead of new, just because price is an issue. He said, if I am going to buy used, this is the only place I should buy from, because they refurbish the equipment, and because they have a reputation. If you scroll around their site, they are price competitive from anything I've seen. Also, he says he's ordered from them and he's never had a problem, either with getting things or if he ever had to return them.

I did go and try to hold the cameras. Both felt ok, I guess. I'm still so new at this. I just, I want a camera for flan, but I have no way that I can afford a grand. Not with school and bills. This place has a 90 plan, so I wouldn't have to pay till February. Which would work for me, because I'd have my school loan refund by then, I am supposed to get it sometime in January.

I'm just worried, you know? Like ok, I'll get a, and then I'll regret it and wish I got b, and then I'll be stuck with a. *wibble*

Wow, that catalogue's got pretty competitive prices, indeed! I totally need to remember that link for when I'm on the good side of the Atlantic.

I totally get the worried thing, did quite a bit of worrying myself when I was thinking about which camera to get. But honestly, if you go for either Canon or Nikon with SLR cameras? You can't go wrong. They're both excellent and I'm sure they'll both make you super happy. :)

Man, too many choices. Now I don't know what to buy. *whimper*

Heh. I so know what that feels like. If money's an issue, I would highly recommend either the Nikon D50 or Canon 350D. As I've said, they're as cheap as you can get in SLR digital cameras, but they're still excellent cameras - just look at the sort of shots I manage to get out of my D50.

You took those with a D50? Now I think I want the D50. I know my professor has a D70. *clueless as to what's the difference*

Date: 2006-10-27 10:11 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] greenie-breizh.livejournal.com
The D70 must be slightly better in terms of color rendering. But with the human eye, especially if you don't print huge prints, I suspect you'd never see the difference.

That's also what I would say about the possible difference between Canon and Nikon as far as skin tones and such - if there is a difference, it's not going to be glaring. It's mostly about learning how to use your camera - I think once you get a hold of how it works, you can get pictures that are just as good from either camera, and either brand.

If price's an issue, check the prices you can find for those two models - that might give your answer. :)
