My scrap of dirt

I'm not too sure what to think of the Heinz commercial that was pulled off the air because it showed two men kissing and their kids. I mean, I'm not sure what the humor was supposed to be with the whole calling one of the two dads 'mom' because it just seems to reinforce (hetero)sexist stereotypes, but there's one thing I'm sure of, it's that I'm fucking tired of hearing gay kisses are "inappropriate for children" and most of all I'm tired of American meddling in other English-speaking countries' affairs. The ad was going to run in England and in England only and so frankly Bill O'Reilley doesn't get to say what he wants or doesn't want to see because aside of all other issues, this is not his fucking country. There are times where I believe it would be appropriate but this is not one of them. No one is being hurt by the ad, and let other countries decide what their moral standards are going to be on gay stuff.

On a much more joyful note, this morning we have lots of Behind the Scenes pictures of Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog that have been released and that just rocks. :) It especially makes me happy to see the three Whedon brothers. And Whedon with super long sleeves. And Whedon with his cowboy hat. And Nathan being Nathan. Basically tons of happy in that album. :D

I think this metaquote is hilarious. I have a lot of things planned next week, so I'm not sure I'll be going to the Super Tuesday party after all. I really can't get any sort of excited about this primary

In case you're wondering if you're seeing this right, yes, these are chocolate vaginas. Isn't that totally awesome? It's part of a campaign on campus to raise awareness about V-day (an event that wants to get people talking about issues of violence against women), and the upcoming show of the Vagina Monologues. The "Pussy Posse" on campus is also selling t-shirts that read "I <3 my vagina". It's kinda of a really cool thing. I will, of course, let you all know if I've enjoyed the vaginas once I've eaten them. *g*


Also, hmm the lines of Sean's body on that picture. And his cuteness on this one. Heee. I love the hair. (Also *points at icon* more Sean cuteness there.) Okay, so what, this was my shallow bit. I would talk very deeply about his projects if he would have any.

A great LJ post with photos (and a video!) of the strike: it'll give you an idea of what it's like in L.A. (and NYC, to a lesser extent) right now. I find it particularly interesting because the strike culture in North America is very different from our strike culture. I've talked about it briefly on my Canada blog when talking about the Vancouver city workers at the beginning of the year: the picket line, asking people to honk for support, using red lights to draw drivers' attention to the strike, that's all things I've seen much less in France than marching protests. Cue in me wishing more and more everyday that I was down there to be there for that experience.

An awesome series of photos from the rally at FOX today (Day 5). I particularly love the shot of the kid with a sheet in his back that reads "Residuals feed me" - but then I've always felt particularly touched to see children in picket lines/strikes/demonstrations. Probably because that's where I come from, too.

The movement of fan support started at Whedonesque has now expanded far beyond Whedon fandom: Fans 4 Writers has been launched today and has lots of resources on what's happening, and what you can do to help. Their main goals are the "Food for Thought" campaign that will be providing food for writers and allies on the picket lines, and running an ad in Variety to let producers know that fans support their writers.

To finish for today (though expect edits...), it always really pleases me to see actors I know supporting the strike by showing up at the picket lines. I've mentioned some Joss-related people and Eddie Izzard before; the Grey's Anatomy cast is also very supportive (the proof in this awesome video here, I love the sense of common purpose), as is the cast for Desperate Housewives and Heroes (at least Greg Grunberg and Senhil Ramamurthy). peewai, I thought about you when I saw that the Scrubs cast is also out there supporting writers. The actors from The Office are also mobilized, and Steve Carrell won't be crossing the picket line to film any more material since he's part of the WGA.

Of course, these are all people who can afford not to work, probably, but we need everyone - and for the publicity and the moral support, I'm so glad they're out there on the picket line.

THE 'LIKE YOU DIDN'T EXPECT IT' EDIT: A short and funny article on the strike by one of the Daily Show writers. That's the good thing about this strike - when writers report on themselves, the writing is obviously excellent. ^^
