Last day in Germany, which means cleaning up, making sure we're not leaving anything behind and buying the last couple of things we need (which, for me, includes Trio cereal boxes and Philadelphia cream cheese).

Yesterday was ecclectic at its best : we went back to the boheme neighborhood for brunch (all-you-can-eat buffet for 9 euros in a lovely restaurant, perfect way to start the day), then did the touristic thing by going to the museum of Musical Instruments, then went to a beer festival (complete with drunk super-heroes and dancing on tables) and finally headed to the Opera for a night of classical music.

Tomorrow we're leaving around 5 am and not only are we gonna be driving all day, but we have the issue of the leak to take care of when we get home. Wheee! Except, y'know, not.

First seen on [livejournal.com profile] yodah's journal...

A song : "I have two fathers". The line I used as the subject of my entry is - very true, and very touching when it's the kid singing it. Worst part is, the melody is sort of catchy. And I find it hilarious when all the kids start singing the chorus. That said, it's - pretty amazing, that this is possible, and of course it'd be in the Netherlands. *tackles Netherlands* Plus, the kid's cute, which never hurts.

Unrelated, except not totally - they're having some kind of election here in Berlin so electoral posters have been springing up everywhere for all the parties, including, of course, the Green Party. Most posters present candidates with the logo of the Party they're running for, but the Green Party has a poster that doesn't feature a candidate, just that slogan :

"Before you see red, vote green."

*tacklessnogs the Green Party*

So clearly I couldn't escape the issue of homophobia even if I remotely tried to. *g* We took the metro the other day and suddenly a poster caught Fan''s eyes : boy kissing (obviously)! On a poster! In the U-bahn (metro)! Of course I had to take a picture and report.

It's a poster edited by Maneo which apparently is Berlin's gay emergency hotline. And I really like it. Love the picture, the guys look so cute and happy. Heeee!

Finally, I'd like to make a public announcement : George Clooney does, actually, star in The Red Thin Line. Contrarily to what it looks like when you watch the first two hours and forty minutes of the movie, the DVD jacket is NOT lying about him being in the movie. However, the word "overstatement" perfectly fits to qualify the fact George's mentioned FIRST on the DVD as a "contributing his talent to this epic".

So yes, we spent the whole movie (since George wouldn't show up till the end) expecting him to appear, and after the first hour had come and gone, we were also almost expecting him to arrive with his trademark "what else?". Certainly made for a few good laughs, which made up for the lack of George's presence.

One of the best moment of the movie was towards the end, when we were getting a bit tired of the emo voice-overs that were slowly taking over all the characters, and Fan' sighed, "The island made them emo..." At which point Peewai rolled his eyes and corrected, "It's not. The war made them emo."

Heee. Have I mentioned spending vacation with Peewai and Fan' is quite a riot at times? You should hear Peewai tell the story of Book's life and the undying love he has for Mal, the woman of his life who turned out to be a male rebel for whom he changed his ways.

Obviously you can't go to Berlin and not do anything related to the wall. There's still a whole portion standing near where we went to have brunch on Sunday, so we walked along. Except this is not the Berlin Wall, not really - it's a memorial to this wall, to all the walls that we put up. It's been transformed into a space for expression for artists and everyday people, when it was intended to enclose and limit. There's something beautiful in that - how we can turn things around, change the meaning of things. At the same time, the very presence of that wall is a reminder of everything it stood for, everything humanity is capable of doing. The Soviet Union cannot be summed up by the Wall, or any one sentence, and ultimately, the wall goes beyond who put it up, because it could have been anyone. Because Israel is doing it, because the US is doing it, because we all do it, put up walls, thinking it will help.

We forget, by obsessing about our security, by worrying about invasions of all sorts, that this is not what matters.

The world is too small for walls.

I've been having fun with the camera, trying to figure out all the settings and everything, so I thought I'd use that to tell the story of a regular day in Berlin.

In TechniCOLOR! )

Everything else is fine except I've LOST my watch and I hate myself. I'm such a fucking klutz and I need my watch. And I really could have used not spending 40 euros on a watch right now. *grumbles*

Also, Gaelic Storm has a new CD out that I can't find anywhere! It's called "Bring yer wellies", which I think is the best title ever. Eeee!
