I was going to tell you that one of my best friends is named Simon and it's not a name I hear often...and then I realized. Yes, I really am that slow sometimes.

Heee! It's funny because Simon seems to be the biggest one of the three, so that doesn't work too well for Simon Tam. ^^ And it's really just a name I like a lot (in French and in English). I'm surprised you don't hear it a lot, it's a fairly common name in France at least?

It's a beautiful name. Not as common here. In fact my friend Simon chose the name for himself because he's FtM transgendered. I'm not sure I know anyone who's had the name since birth.

Is it? I never met someone named Simon here.

I've never met someone named Robert but it's not exactly an uncommon name. ^^ Simon's definitely not as common as other names (though it probably depends on the generation, too) but it's not unusual for a name.

Well, according to http://www.meilleursprenoms.com, Robert is the 14th first name during XXth century, while Simon is the 127th, and even though most Roberts were born a long while ago and a bunch of them are no longer alive, they are still four times more numerous. So I would say Simon is quite not as common. :P

It gained popularity since 1980, though.

I wasn't saying Simon is as common as Robert - I was just saying the fact that you've never met someone named Simon is not necessarily an indicator of how common the name is. The fact I've never met anyone named Robert even though it's much more common than Simon (which I don't doubt) just makes my point.

I'm not surprised it gained popularity after 1980, though I'm not sure why - maybe just because the person I know was born in the mid-1980. :)
