Just went to see Paris, je t'aime. It's basically a movie made of lots of short movies about Paris and love. The movies are unequal but some of them are absolutely brilliant. My top three are : Quais de Seine, 14ème arrondissement and Faubourg Saint Denis. The one with Natalie Portman and the tousled haired guy in Le Marais gave BAD PHOTOGRAPHY URGES. Am not kidding.
And so many good actors. Beyond the famous ones. You can't go wrong with people who have played in movies like Elephant or The Laramie Project.

14ème arrondissement I loved how touching this one was. How true it felt, what the woman was saying, but also her life, her feelings, and the way she talked - it was so real, the accent and the mistakes and the language. It's really the truth of that woman, and the simplicity of her story that I loved. |
Faubourg Saint Denis |
Faubourg Saint Denis This is my favorite movie by far because I loved the style. The two characters are just so right with each other and so full of life, both in different ways, I love Natalie's young craziness, typical American young adult and her voice, her accent, her bright face and her smile, and Melchior (god, terrible name) was so perfect to complete her, calm and quiet and full of love and feelings. I didn't want her to break up one minute into the story. And the visuals in that movie were amazing. So many perfect shots that could work on their own as photographs. Plus I clearly have undying love for moments stolen from couples, hugging and kissing and laughing, it's almost not meant to last but I love it, confident, happy, young love. So beautiful. And Natalie works so well for that very mood. |
Le Marais This segment in itself was pretty good, but c'mon : it's called Le Marais, by Gus Van Sant, could you try and make it more gay? Plus it sort of annoyed me that it couldn't just be a gay couple in love, much like what they did with Natalie and Melchior, but instead it had to sort of be about being gay, about that guy not understanding he was being hit on, and I just wanted to see a gay couples kissing and being happy, and just about love. I don't know. That said. ZOMG HAIR! That kid, Gaspar, had the best. hair. of. EVER. Half-long and messy and always in his eyes and seriously I LOVED it and it made me want to take so many pictures from every angle ZOMG. (He also looked adorable when he was a kid, though hair is sadly short.) |
Loin du 16ème Very touching segment as well, simple and quiet. Loved the song and the Spanish. |
Quais de Seine That girl was so gorgeous, and she did make the veil look beautiful. |

I'm really not a big fan of Fanny Ardent and I didn't like her sequence so much... My second favorite is Natalie's. It's funny because this one and 14ème arrondissement are just perfect for me, they speak of the very themes I'm always trying to work on, especially in photography. I'd like to be able to watch the two of them again, but not the whole movie.
