This whole preparing a lecture thing is so much fun :D

I'm going to start working on the powerpoint and so I'm shopping around for illustrations, and realized that High School Musical is like, perfect. It's school and family entertainment and it's all about heterosexuality. Actually I'm just wondering now if I shouldn't try and show THAT in class. Because seriously. It would be so funny.

(As a sidenote: Oh, baby Simon. You're so cute going for the dark and broody look. The sad thing is I do actually find him really pretty hot, especially with the longish hair. I fail. ^^)

I just wish I could find a high quality image of Troy (Efron) and Gabriella (Hudgens) with a school backdrop, but barring that, still so many to choose from. Oh, High School Musical. You will never cease to amaze me.

...I almost want to rewatch those movies now. Except I know they really won't be half as funny without you, [livejournal.com profile] fan_elune. Get yourself over here, will you? ^^

...why isn't Sean Maher doing these photoshoots? Damn, Efron.

LOL. I realized Zac Efron is actually only two years younger than I am, so it seems fair enough for me to lust a little :p

LOL. It doesn't have to be that bad. He's not underage anymore, so after all, it's fair game. *g*

Good point - though YoSafBridge wasn't underage either. ;)

Btw both pics arrived - this one *points to icon* including resume, with more detailed info about Sean's theatre work and training! \o/

Why won't that baby Simon link work for me? Le sigh.

Also, yeah, I've been wanting to see them again too. Ack!

Tsk, why is imdb screwing with some of you? Here it is (http://www.imdb.com/media/rm937989120/nm1374980). It's too great to be missed. :D

Awww! We might have to rewatch all three in December :p

ahahahaha oh god. I just can't take you seriously, Zac.

lol totes. For uber Ryan fangirling. I'm never sure he's called Ryan, is he called Ryan?

Heee and now Every you, every me's playing. Just when I was thinking about how Ryan was totally subtextly gay and that worked with your point, didn't it. The one gay kid is never said to be gay, even when they're supposedly celebrating differences.

LOL I know, right? That photo just makes me crack up! And yet somehow I still find him attractive. Just funny as well. :D

I think he's called Ryan? Anyway. I don't know if I'll uberfangirl but you're welcome to. I might be too busy laughing.

Yeah, that's absolutely part of my point. Gay's invisible, really the only way that it IS visible is through the camp stereotype. Seriously, the whole movie is like a perfect example of how heterosexualized high school is (do they have a dance? if they don't, they will in the next movie... THE heterosexualized school event, the prom) and the whole idea of the production/reproduction of heterosexuality works particularly well since it's a very, very popular movie. My 5 graders were fans!

And now I'm thinking of Mean Girls and how the gay guy winds up being the only one not having a significant other come movie's end, and how he goes to the prom with the one everybody thinks is a dyke. Even the gay dude takes a girl!

Yeah, it's pretty resilient imagery, and pretty damn common that the gay character ends up not paired up when that rarely - if ever - happens to the hetero kids. :/

So what's the thesis, exactly? Something about the treatment of homosexuality in teen movies? That would be interesting. Might also want to mention the racism...I was appalled by one particular line in John Hughes's "Sixteen Candles," in which one of the main characters expresses disdain for the idea of dating a black man. It wasn't even a long line, it might just have been an expression of disgust...whatever it was, I couldn't believe that something so blatantly racist got into such a mainstream film.

The lecture is about the role that schools play in producing and reproducing hegemonic understandings of sexuality, thereby promoting heterosexuality and silencing homosexuality. It's actually got nothing to do with the media :) but High School Musical is perfect because it's an illustration of what an American high school is like in our common unconscious, and that illustration is so painfully heteronormative.

I've never seen Sixteen Candles but it's not making me want to :/
