Well, according to http://www.meilleursprenoms.com, Robert is the 14th first name during XXth century, while Simon is the 127th, and even though most Roberts were born a long while ago and a bunch of them are no longer alive, they are still four times more numerous. So I would say Simon is quite not as common. :P

It gained popularity since 1980, though.

I wasn't saying Simon is as common as Robert - I was just saying the fact that you've never met someone named Simon is not necessarily an indicator of how common the name is. The fact I've never met anyone named Robert even though it's much more common than Simon (which I don't doubt) just makes my point.

I'm not surprised it gained popularity after 1980, though I'm not sure why - maybe just because the person I know was born in the mid-1980. :)
